An independent interest organization for everyone

This page is for personal membership in EMS Norway. Personal members include ambulance personnel, paramedics, students, apprentices, healthcare professionals, and others who want to support the work for a united Norwegian ambulance service. Organization members and partners are presented on a separate page.

EMS Norway is a non-profit membership organization built on the idea of a united Norwegian ambulance service working toward common goals, regardless of county borders or organizational affiliation. We believe a patient is a patient no matter where in the country they are, and that the ambulance service’s treatment provision, guidelines, and procedures should be more consistent than they are today.

By becoming a member of EMS Norway, you support the work behind the national ambulance championship and stand behind the call for a united ambulance service.

  • Your membership is a voice for common national treatment standards, procedures, and guidelines in prehospital care.
  • Your membership is a voice for the benefit of patients and a statement of support for everyone working throughout Norway’s ambulance services.

Our history

A few years ago, those of us working in the ambulance service were fortunate enough to have the opportunity to compete in international ambulance championships abroad. Over time, more of us experienced how exciting, enjoyable, and educational these competitions could be. The shared view among the Norwegian participants was that we should do this in Norway as well. That became the background for establishing EMS Norway as an independent interest organization in the summer of 2015, with the establishment of a national ambulance championship as one of its purposes.

Why an independent umbrella organization?

Historically, the ambulance service in Norway has not only been divided geographically. Organizationally, people have belonged to different employee organizations, and national standards for education as well as common medical guidelines and treatment procedures have been lacking. Since Norway has not had a tradition for this type of professional-level training and competition, it was difficult to find an existing organizational structure with the prerequisites and broad appeal needed to drive such an initiative alone. We believed there was a need for an independent banner that the entire ambulance service could stand behind.

Basic idea

Whether you work in an ambulance as a nurse, anesthesiologist, ambulance worker, apprentice, student, or paramedic, and regardless of organizational affiliation or whether you work by car, boat, motorcycle, or air ambulance, we are all emergency medical personnel, we are all EMS Norway.
